Interferential Current Therapy
In typical musculoskeletal pain cycles, pain causes spasms which cause pain which causes spasm, etc., as a positive feedback loop. Interferential therapy breaks that cycle by interfering with the normal pain frequencies. Nerves run on electricity and therefore have frequencies. In Interferential therapy, a current is put in one direction and then another current is put to cross the first current (picture). At the point of cross, an interference current is produced. Whatever current is running at the same place that is matched by the interference current is blocked. This, then breaks the positive feedback loop and allows the pain to decrease and the muscle to relax. This works almost like a light switch.
Interferential Current Therapy is used to treat:
- Circulatory and muscle disorders
- Stiff joints
- Joint injuries
- Edema
- Inflammation
- Muscle spasms
Advantages of Interferential Current Therapy include:
- Reducing or eliminating pain in a safe manner
- Noticeable decrease in swelling and inflammation
- Restoring lost movement and improving range-of-motion
- Stimulating the natural hormones which can help the body heal faster
Additionally, Interferential Current Therapy also assists in blood circulation and rushes recovery by stimulating endorphins.
